WEEKLY UPDATE ON COVID-19 AND EMERGING HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES WITHIN THE WORKING ENVIROMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS IN UGANDA

THE WEEK OF 10TH TO 16TH JANUARY, 2022

Dear Human Rights Defender and HRCU Partner in the Human Rights defending arena,

Hoping that this email finds you and loved ones/Team are well and safe.

HRCU continues to value/appreciate your work and prays that we continue to partner in contributing to a favorable environment where human rights and fundamental freedoms can be promoted, protected and realized.

We are glad that the economy is opening up and citizens are slowly picking up and recovering from COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant effects.

By way of update, results of COVID-19 tests done on 16 January 2022 confirmed 257 new cases. The cumulative confirmed cases are 158,933 with the break down being 252 Alerts And Contacts; Kampala (124), Wakiso (76), Oyam (10), Kween (9), Arua (6), Gulu (5), Soroti (2), Jinja (3), Kyotera (5), Tororo (1), Mbale (1), Hoima (2), Gomba (1), Kabarole (1), Amuru (3), Lira (1), Busia (1), Kisoro (1) 5 Truck drivers; Tororo (2), Kyotera (2), Kampala (1).

We ought to remain vigilant and observe the standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all material times. Please feel confident if you are the only one wearing your mask, sanitizing or keeping social distance.  You are doing the right thing.

Let’s continue to speak against all forms of abuses and violations of human rights and request all relevant duty bearers to respect Constitutionalism and rule of law. Let due processes of the law take their course and let’s not have anyone interfering with anyone’s rights and their enjoyment.
